The Batterton Cemetery (aka Blue Cemetery) is located in Madison County, Kentucky. The current owner (2005) runs a horse stable on the land the cemetery and the cabin are on. Deer Run Stables overlooks a spectacular valley of hills and contains a path down the hill (to the right) to the cemetery. The cemetery is a small, but well kept for its era. Years ago Myron Batterton located the cemetery and with the permission of the owners refurbished part of it. The cemetery has a wall down the middle, seperating the slave's graves from the white's graves. The slave side was not cleared out and our attempts to identify any names on the headstones were not fruitful. From the cemetery there is a path to the original "road". This road was laid of riverbed rock and is a beautiful, but rough trip via foot... be sure to where good shoes and take water. About 1/2 mile (or so it seemed) down the path you can follow to a right turn (currently marked by a pig and stable boy lawn ornaments and what appears to be an old smokehouse) to another path down to the cabin. Not far from this intersection, we noticed some old steps that appeared at one time to belonged to another home. The cabin has a horsetrail around the front side. There is an old hitching post "hidden" in the tall brush that surrounds both sides of the trail. The trail leads down to the creek bed, which runs dry now, but servers for an incredible view and serene environment. The creek is open on the side to the cabin, but the other side has a cliff-like wall, which served to cool the air (a nice break on the late August day we visited). We believe this cabin to be originally built by Abraham Batterton. These pictures were supplied by Jill Kastello and taken in August 2005.
