Misc*   Joseph was a captain in Roger's Rangers who fought at Ft. Louisbourg in Nova Scotia in 1758, on Lake Champlain/Lake George at Montreal and was with Rogers when the took over the French forts in the Great Lakes area when these forts were surrendered to Great Britain. Benjamin, Jospeh's younger brother, served with him and marched the French prisoners from Fort Miamis (Fort Wayne today) back to Fort Detroit in the middle of the winter, probably December 1760 or early Janaury, 1761.

His grave is located in the middle of a corn field (private property) south of Clarendon, Vermont, with a very unique marker and a small iron fence around the grave site. The white marbel tombstone which is about 3 inches thick and stands about three feet high, has an engraving of a Continental officer in uniform with a tricorn hat and an upp raised sword with the following epitaph:

The other side of the stone bears the following inscription:

This stone is erected in
Testimony of respect
by his Brethren in arms.

This is said to be the only tombstone with such an engraving. Joseph was wounded during the Revolutionary War while fighting on Ranger's Island on Lake Champlain. A "wooden splinter" from a gun carriage wounded hi in the head. Several of his men were trying to carry him home to Claremont when he died at Fort Hill on the way down the old Crown Point road, south of today's Clarendon. This is where he is buried today. Later, some of his comrades in arms had the tombstone engraved and placed on his grave. Joseph's wife was the sister of Nathan Stone, a noted leader of Windsor, Vermont.1
