Note* | INTRODUCTION ANSTADTS IN BAVARIA No one denies that the surname Onstott is German, but the exact origin isuncertain. According to family tradition, three Onstott brothers camefrom Germany. Other sources mention Holland. Recent research by a German specialist strongly indicates that JohannGeorg Anstatt who came to Philadelphia on the ship Two Brothers in 1747was our immigrant ancestor and that his origin was Bad Duerkheim,Bavaria. All genealogical information indicates this to be true. However, positive proof is still being sought but may never be foundbecause of lack of good records at that period of time. The following brief history of Bad Duerkheim was prepared by TrudySchenk, our German Researcher: "In the small town of Bad Duerkheim, which is located in the formerPalentine district of Germany, we find a Johann Georg Anstadt born May26,1718. There is no remark made in his birth entry that he later leftthe town to emigrate to America. A search of the parish records of BadDuerkheim up to 1780 for marriages and deaths do indicate that JohannGeorg Anstadt indeed left the town because there is no mention of hisname after 1718. "Bad Duerkheim lies close to the Rhein River which was the way of travelto Rotterdam for early Pennsylvania emigrants. Originally the name wasonly Duerkheim. "The name Anstadt first appears in the Evang-Lutheran Parish Registers in1708 when Johann Peter Anstadt from Birkenfeld (a master tailor) marriedCatherine Jochim from Wachenheim. "Duerkheim suffered much destruction during such wars as the Thirty YearWar which ended in 1648, the pestilence in 1666 which took 336inhabitants to the grave and in 1674 a few thousand head of soldiers tookquarters as a result of the Holland War. The largest part of the townburned down. Many of the inhabitants were killed in a barbarian manner. The Kings of France had the desire to own all of the lands across theirborders including the area around Duerkheim. As it has happened often inhistory, inheritances as a result of a marriage turned one royal houseagainst the other. In the Lutheran Parish Registers of 1713 thefollowing explanation is made: After the death of 50 children this year who died of pox the French cameinto the land and destroyed the fields. They shut down the people andafterwards, plundered the village. The small Army had their headquartersin Duerkheim. During this time many people died and were buried withoutsong or sound. The city church was used as the prison. They came in thewinter and brought dreadful diseases with them. With the year 1714 thetown began to progress and prosper. "Duerkheim received the name Bad because of the many healing naturalsprings." The following is a part of a letter dated Oct 26,1948 from the Chief ofthe Division of Public Records of the State Archives, PennsylvaniaHistorical and Museum Commission: "The name John Anstatt appears on a list of soldiers of Washington Countywho fought in the Revolutionary War. "The name George Onstett appears as a Private, First Class, in Capt.William Strain's Company of Militia of the Sixth Battalion, CumberlandCounty Militia, commanded by Col. James Dunlap, July 27, 1782. "The name Peter Angstadt appears in the Lancaster County Militiarecords. In our passenger lists of Pioneers we find that a Johann GeorgAnstatt arrived in the Ship Two Brothers, and took the Oath ofAllegiance, Oct 13, 1747. A Johannes Anstatt arrived on the ShipSpeedwell, Sept 25, 1749." Another letter dated Nov 4, 1948, written by the Director of the StateLibrary, Department of Public Instruction at Harrisburg, Pennsylvaniacontains the following: "We find the following persons were immigrants: Johannes Georg Anstatt arrived on the ship 'Two Brothers', Oct 13, 1747. A man namedJohannes Anstatt came on the Ship Speedwell and took the Oath ofAllegiance to Great Britain 1749, as was required of all males 16 yearsold and over. "George Anstatt came on the ship Richard and Elizabeth, Sept. 28, 1733.The Captains list of that date also survived. He gave the age of Georgas 37. There was also a boy named Johannes on the same ship. His agewas given as one year. George Aongsted had a warrant for 60 acres of land, 1749, inPhiladelphia. A George Onstead had a warrant for 30 acres in Berks Co,in 1753. A man by the same name was taxed in Hopewell Twp, CumberlandCounty,1782. A George Onstatt served in the Washington County Militia as a Ranger onthe Frontier, at the time of the Revolution. We do not find anyinformation accept his name in the military record, as a ranger and hisname in the Militia. It is an updated list, but known to refer to theRevolution War. His name appears as "Anstate" in the company of CaptainThomas Parkinson, Oct 2, 1781,and Lt. John Ritchey. Compiled by: Oscar L. Onstott [Descendents of Johann Onstott] | |

Note* | Elihu left Indiana in 1833 and came to Illinois making his home with Haskins Ozburn who lived about a half mile east and north of Pyatt Station on the Illinois Central R.R. While working for Ozburn riding through woods after a cow, near what is known as Woodside Ford on Beaucoup Creek, about a mile north of Oxburn's house, he ran into a tree bruising his knee causing what was known at that time as "White Swelling". This caused his knee to be stiff and his leg short, so that in later life he wore a shoe with an extra inch cork sole on it-his right foot. During the trouble with his knee he was laid up in bed for a long time cared for by Mrs. Ozburn, whom he always praised in highest terms. Later Elihu went to live with Pheobe Hickman who then lived in Perry Co. She was Pheobe Taylor before her marriage, and while in this vicinity he became acquainted with Ann Wells, a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Wells who lived in Perry Co. They were married about 1839 and went to live on a 20-acre tract of land that he owned in Vancil settlement in Perry County. The home was a small log cabin which was all that was available in those days. They had no furniture except what was made by her husband. The door was used as a table and thus they made out for some time. Elihu made chairs out of hickory bark. They were of very good quality and much in use in those days. Later Elihu moved to Chester, Illinois and built an exceptionally nice house for that time. His son William was born there but the other children were born on this farm. He was a very thrifty man, trading in stock farms buying hides and rags etc. Shortly after Duquoin was put on the railroad he opened up a hardware store-the first hardware store in Duquoin-a small frame building. Here he prospered soon erecting a two story building and enlarging his business. Just prior to his death the store was operated by Don M. Onstott and Edward Kimmel, son and son-in-law. This corner has been occupied by a hardware store for almost seventy years. In 1922 and with the exception of two or three years when it was owned and operated by Harry C. Miller, it was owned and operated by some member of the Onstott family. It was about 1855 when Elihu moved his family to Duquoin and lived in a story and half house on the corner of South and Milberry Streets. Later he built the two story brick just east of it where he was living at the time of his death. Elihu Onstott was born March 24, 1816 and died Sept. 28, 1882 from an attack of paralysis, it being his third stroke. For years he served as Justice of Peace in the community and acted very ably. He was addicted to the use of profane language when angered and at such times was very vindictive. He was kind to his family, well known and very well-liked. He accumulated a small fortune which he left for his wife and children. From the time he was about 24 years old, he was almost white haired, due possibly to the lack of a father. He ran away from home, probably due to humiliation, and never came back. He took off his shoes and put them on a stump where they could be seen, so that his mother would know that he had not been killed. He at the time carried a small gourd, which he used to make a whistling noise. His sister Orpha said she could hear the sound of that whistle long after he was gone, and always expected him to come back. He never returned or sent word where he was until after he was married when he drove overland with his wife and son William, then only a baby. He stopped at his mother's home and asked for lodging. She did not know him, but upon learning he was from Illinois, inquired about her lost son, whereupon he told her who he was. He is said to have perfected the first riding plow. Owing to his lameness, he found difficulty in following a plow, so went about making a wheeled instrument, so he could ride and plow. He never had it patented so it was dropped.
