Note*   Don M. Onstott, was engaged in a hardware business with his father for sometime, and later with Edward Kimmel, his brother-in-law. Later Ed took up the management of the brick flour mill, which had been given to him and Don by don's father Elihu Onstott. Later Don sold his interest in the hardware business and took up the management of the mill. While here he became paralyzed, which caused him to walk with great difficulty. Pernina's marriage record states she was born in Washington County, Indiana. Her obit states she was born in Knox County, Indiana inVincennes. Pernina's daughter, Alma Geiss remembers visiting the househer mother was born in outside Vincennes. She thinks that Pernina'smother (Rebecca Doan Newby) is buried near by-that Rebecca died whenPernina was four years old. After Rebecca died, Elisha took the childrento Clay County, Illinois, to stay with their grandparents, until heremarried a short time later. Since the Newby's are buried in WashingtonCounty, Ind, and the Doan's were probably dead by that time; it is possible that the children stayed with the Onstott's who lived in thatarea. Elisha's mother was an Onstott. According to Mrs. Geiss, EmmanuelFrank Newby left for Texas and was never heard from again. The lastcensus I found him in was 1870. [Descendants of Johann Onstott]

Note*   John Ervin Newby, was born in Washington County, Indiana, on November 2,1852, the son of Samuel and Orpha Onstott Newby. John Ervin Newby was alifelong farmer, he being the owner of eighty acres of land which hecultivated as a general farmer, until his death on November 3, 1900. Mr.Newby was active as a Democrat and was prominent in the United Brethenchurch, a congregation which John Ervin served for many years as a classleader.
Lucinda Newby was born in Howard Twsp, Washington County, Indiana onMay 1, 1850,and died on Sept.15, 1884. She was a member of a well knownfamily of the community, who lived on a farm in Howard Twp, for manyyears.
After the death of his wife, Lucinda, John Ervin was marriedsecondly, in the year 1887, to Nancy E. Arnold, who was born in HowardTwsp, Washington County, Indiana, the daughter of John S. and JaneGoldberry Arnold. To this marriage were born six children.

The last rites for Samuel A. Newby 72 years old, retired WashingtonCounty farmer, who died Friday morning at his home on West Market St, atthe Smith Funeral home. The Rev. Elmer C. McKiney, pastor of the Weirmemorial Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Newby retired from active farming, sold his Howard Twp farm andmoved to Salem about eight years ago. Survivors; the wife, a son Leslieof Indianapolis; daughters, Mrs. Dewey Young of Salem and Mrs. Harmon ofIndianapolis.

FUNERAL RITES HELD FOR SAMUEL A. NEWBY; DEMOCRATE JAN. 2, 1946

Funeral rites were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the SmithFuneral home for Samuel A. Newby 73, who died at his home on West MarketStreet Friday morning. The Rev. E.C. McKiney conducted the service andburial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Newby was a retired farmer and business man and formerly livedin Howard twsp. He was a good citizen and was loved and respected by allwho knew him. Survivors are the widow, one son, Leslie Newby,Indianapolis; Mrs. Dewey Young, Salem and Mrs. Harmon, Indianapolis.


SAMUEL A. NEWBY

Samuel Addison Newby, son of Samuel and Orpha Onstott Newby, thelast of thirteen children, was born October 26,1862,in Howard Twp, Washington Co, Indiana, and departed this life Dec.8, 1945, in Salem, atthe age of 83 years, 2 months, and 2 days.
He was married to Sarah Jane Lowery Nov. 2, 1882, and to this unionfour children were born. He was a good neighbor, a faithful husband, andever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Sarah Jane, who has passedher 83rd. birthday; Mrs. Eupha L, wife of Ace Harmon, Leslie L. Newby ofIndianapolis,a nd M. Cecil, wife of Dewey Young, Salem, L. Clevy Newbypreceded him in death Nov. 28, 1904. There are seven grandchildren andfive great grandchildren.
He was a good farmer and operated a sawmill, well drill, threshingmachine clover huller and corn shredder. Always kept his engines andmachinery in good running order. He always pleased the farmers whoengaged him for more than forty years.

Mrs. Sarah Jane Lowery-Newby died Tuesday morning in her home onNorth Main Street, Salem. She was 88, being born August 12, 1862. Herhusband, Samuel, preceded her in Death. Surviving are two children, Mrs.Cecil Young, Salem, and Mrs. Eupha Harmon, Indianapolis. Funeralservices were being held Thursday afternoon in the Dennie Chapel withRev. Robert Gingery in charge. Interment was made in Crown Hill.
